Mall Teens

Jim is 17 years old. Our camera man, Phil, met Jim while he was shopping at the mall. Jim says that he started smoking cigarettes in the closet of his bedroom when he was seven years old and smokes about half a pack of cigarettes a day now. He prefers Marlboros, which he buys at the convenience store where he works. Before that, his mom bought him his cigarettes. Jim says that his older brother's girlfriend, Angela, encouraged him to start smoking.

Chachi is the 16 year old brother of James and Josh, and the father of Kristy's baby. Chachi did not interview with us because he was working that day.

Shawn is Jim's younger brother. Shawn is 16 years old and says that he started smoking cigarettes on a daily basis when he was thirteen, though he has a younger brother who was smoking at home before he started. He says that his brother's girlfriend, Melissa, and her friend, Krystal, encouraged him to start smoking cigarettes behind the garage. Shawn says that he also likes to smoke Phillies cigars some times.

James is Chachi's and Josh's 15 year old brother. He says that he started smoking cigarettes on a daily basis when he was thirteen. He prefers to smoke Old Gold's and Swisher Sweets, which he gets from his dad and sister. James has no children yet.

Josh is Chachi's and James' brother, and Kristin's boyfriend. Josh is 13 years old and says that he has been smoking cigarettes on a daily basis since he was eleven. Josh likes to smoke Marlboros, Old Golds and Swisher Sweets, which he gets from his dad and sister. Josh and Kristin have no children yet, but say that they like to smoke cigarettes after sex.

Dana is Crystal's cousin and Kristin's brother. He is 13 years old and says that he smokes about a pack of cigarettes every day. Dana says that he started smoking cigarettes on a daily basis when he was seven years old. He prefers to smoke Newport Kings, which he gets from his grandma, and Swisher Sweets. He also likes to roll his own cigarettes.

Kristy is Melissa's 18 year old sister and Chachi's girlfriend. Kristy and Chachi have one child and she is currently pregnant with their second. Kristy did not interview with us because she was babysitting Krystal's baby that day.

Krystal is 17 years old and says that her parents gave her her first pack of cigarettes and a lighter when she was eleven and has been smoking ever since. She prefers smoking Newport 100s, which she gets from her parents and says that she smokes about a pack a day. She says, proudly, that she got her sixteen year old brother started smoking. Krystal had a baby about a year ago with Jim and Shawn's brother, who is not in the pictures. She says that she actually quit smoking for the first six months of her pregnancy. Krystal shows great smoking style, with frequent pop inhales and long, thick exhales.

Melissa is Jim's girlfriend. She is 16 years old and says has been smoking cigarettes on a daily basis since she was nine. She prefers smoking Newport Kings, which her mother has been buying for her since she turned eleven. Melissa says that she taught her older sister, Krystal and her twelve year old brother to smoke. Melissa has no children, but was pregnant at 14 and miscarried, though she cut down under a pack a day during her pregnancy. She thinks she may be pregnant again now.

Crystal is Shawn's girlfriend. Crystal is 14 years old. She says that she started smoking cigarettes on a daily basis when she was thirteen, though her cousin, Kristin, says that Crystal taught her to smoke when Crystal was eleven, and her other cousin, Dana, says that Crystal encouraged him to start smoking when she was eight and Kristin was five. Crystal says that she starts each day with a cigarette and smokes about half a pack each day at home. Crystal's favorite brand of cigarettes is Marlboro Menthol, though she usually smokes Newport Kings which she gets from her mother and grandfather. Crystal has never had any children and claims virginity, though she likes to smoke after (oral or manual?) sex.

Kristin is Crystal's 11 year old cousin. She says that she started smoking cigarettes when she was nine, though her cousin, Dana says that he was smoking with Kristin and Crystal when Kristin was five. At any, rate, Kristin demonstrates a strong and persistent smokers' cough already and has no trouble inhaling cigars. Kristin says that she smokes about half a pack of cigarettes every day, and usually starts each day with a cigarette and a cup of coffee with her mom. Kristin's boyfriend is Josh. They do not have any children yet, but Kristin says that one of her favorite times to smoke a cigarette is after sex. Kristin says that she also likes to smoke mild cigars like Swisher Sweets.
