These are the initial interviews with Lou, Leah, Ona and Pam. In them, we talk about how old each person was when they first started smoking and how their habit developed. We talk about family issues, such as how their parents feel about their smoking, and how they feel about their children smoking. We also investigate how smoking glamour in the mass media may have influenced their decision to try smoking, which brand to smoke, associations between smoking and sexual attraction and their assessments of possible health risks. Altogether, we spend about 50 minutes with Pam, followed by one hour with Lou, Leah and Ona. The interview with Pam, is conducted by Lou, who also smokes on camera. The interview with Lou, Leah and Ona is conducted by Kiki, who also smokes on camera.
Each of these young ladies exhibits a unique and remarkable style of smoking. Together, like the Marx Brothers, they completely cover the four personality types of classic literature: melancholy (Lou), choleric (Ona), phlegmatic (Leah) and sanguine (Pam). Lou, who is the most contemplative of the four, frequently does a long French inhale, followed by an exhale of several luxuriously thick smoke rings. Ona, who has a more decisive personality, uses pop inhales, long French inhales, and constantly teases you with her eyes and lips when she smokes. With calculated precision, she controls men like puppets with a wink of her eye or a hint of a smile. Unlike Lou, who worries over each excruciating detail, Ona, shoots from the hip with deadly precision. Leah, who is easy going and accommodating, takes very quick French inhales, pop inhales through her nose, followed by long, thick exhales. Pam, who craves an audience and is driven intensely by feelings of the heart at any moment, takes monstrous inhales and fills the entire room with smoke every time that she exhales. Together, they are quite a show. Just one thing though, don't believe a word they say. None of them seemed to know their correct age, first name or how many children they have during the hour that I knew them.
